VW California forums are full of prospective campervan owners asking for advice on which model would suit them best and there are as many ardent ‘Cali’ fans in favour of the Beach as there are of the Ocean. We spoke to Guy Vincent, California Specialist at Volkswagen Van Centre in Preston to ask his opinion, I’m going to give a diplomatic answer here and not plump for one or the other! What I do want to highlight are the reasons why buying a Volkswagen California, whichever model, is a very smart thing to do. Back to the Ocean v Beach battle; why the big debate? What is the difference between these two models and why does the discussion exercise the minds of so many campervan enthusiasts? Well the first thing to note is that this VW campervan is just as loved and makes its’ owners just as passionate as its iconic predecessor. It’s universally acknowledged as a fantastic piece of kit, and the truth is that both the Ocean and the Beach have ardent fans, so, it’s really not possible to make a mistake. Excellent build quality, lots of forethought and great design make this is a campervan for life, not just for Summer and whichever suits you best, you’ll find it changes your life in a very positive way. Since the outgoing Beach model, the Beach now features improvements including blinds for the front windows, a touchscreen camper-function control panel and engine upgrades. Both California Beach models come with the same engine choices for both the Tour and Camper, 150PS 7-speed DSG, however, the California Ocean comes with the additional option of 204PS , 199PS , 204PS 4MOTION and 199PS 4MOTION variants. First up is the Beach. The Beach slots in at the entry price point of the California line and come in two versions – the Beach Tour and the Beach Camper. The California Beach models are more MPVs with pop-up roof than fully equipped mobile getaways, but with the added flexibility to carry more people as a result. If opting for the Beach Tour, you’ll be able to seat five people as standard, with the option to increase to six or seven, while the Camper carries four as standard (same as existing California’s) with a fifth optional. The UK California Beach Camper variant, comes complete with a mini kitchen that folds out from the side panel and can be tucked away when not in used. There's no sink or fridge, unlike the California Ocean, but there is a single-burner gas stove and worktop. Those happy with just a sleeper van will be able to get a more capable people-hauler by opting for the Beach Tour. This is set up as a ‘day van’, with a smaller storage unit along the side of the van and no standard kitchen, instead complete with twin sliding side doors to make loading up passengers a breeze. True Beach lovers won’t mind the absence of a full kitchen at all; they prefer the flexible space this more minimalist interior gives them and are happy to cook outside. Beach fans may already have a pop-up tent and camping stoves, if not, they buy these along with a coolbox and they’re ready to rock and roll. Both Beach Camper and Tour , when the seats are folded down, provide a substantial double bed, providing comfy, cosy sleeping for 2 people or maybe even 3 if you have little people on-board. Another double bed is revealed, when you manually pop-up the roof and you very definitely get a comfy, snuggly, luxurious night’s sleep. With a picnic table and two chairs concealed in the boot lid and sliding doors, the added extra that most Beach buyers will be adding is the wind-out awning, just in case you need to hide from the thoroughly British showers or indeed keen in shade on sunny days. For lovers of the Beach the ability to be flexible on seating means their California can be used more as an MPV when it’s not being used as a campervan. For ocean lovers however, this is a cop-out! Opt for a California ‘Ocean’ model – the true top-of-the range camper – and this time the pop-up roof glides up hydraulically at the touch of a button; and when you wake from your comfy slumbers, you can pop the kettle on and get the bacon frying, on the built-in hob. You can wash up after yourself, keep food and drink chilled in the fridge and store your clothes in the wardrobe. What’s the pay-off for all this added glamping-ness? Well the downstairs bed is narrower to accommodate the kitchen/wardrobe etc, but it’s still super-comfy and pocketed sprung mattress bringing home comforts to the road! In exchange for this narrower downstairs double, you not only get a kitchen, but also storage galore, a pull-out table and there’s still the option to configure your seating in different ways, just not up to 7 seats. Referred to by ardent VW campervan enthusiasts, as the ‘full-fat’ option, the ocean will take you anywhere, anytime; keep you warm and your food cold; offer a haven in bad weather and a hotel in warmer climes. On the outside the Ocean looks swish too with LED headlights and even double glazing in the rear cabin; there’s also state-of-the-art digital cockpit, rear-view camera system, climatronic three-zone automatic climate control and an auxiliary air heater. The Beach camper is easier and perhaps more practical day-to-day and arguably offers more flexible sleeping; the Ocean has everything, including the kitchen-sink and a touch of luxury. In truth, whether you’re a camper or a glamper the Volkswagen California is definitely the campervan for you and don’t forget, with plenty of pre-loved VW campervans for sale, the choice isn’t just about Ocean versus Beach. The MP has a more car-like driving feel and seems definitely quieter. The VW has a higher and more forward driving position, giving a better view, but also making it less comfortable on rough roads. Both handle pretty well and while cruising on an autoroute both are very comfortable.

Super praktisch ist auch der „Park Assist“, der das Einparken auf Wunsch automatisch übernimmt und so das Fahrzeug selbst in die kleinste Lücke bugsiert. What’s this, then?It’s the latest Volkswagen California. It couldn’t be much different to its Ferrari-made namesake, being, y’know, a diesel-powered campervan. It’s arguably more of a hero than the Fezza, though, laser-guided at its target audience with a truly precise purpose and exceedingly clever - Page continues belowVan-based campers are available in all shapes and sizes, of course, but VW boasts that the Cali is the only one with its kitchen and bedrooms built in from birth in the factory, rather than afterwards via a third-party company. It also has some unbeatable heritage, tracing its roots back to those classic 21-window VW Campers of the what’s new?Essentially the California has been updated because the van upon which it’s based – VW’s Transporter – has just reached its sixth generation. Naturally, there’s not been much change in the way of design, with fancier headlights and some braver colour schemes about the sum of news lies beneath the Cali's boxy exterior. Three engines are available, all of them 2-litre turbodiesels, in 100bhp, 148bhp and 201bhp flavours. The more powerful two offer four-wheel drive and a DSG automatic gearbox among their - Page continues belowThe Cali blurs the lines between car and van better than ever before, too, with all manner of technology available, including a big posh stereo, adaptive suspension, active cruise control and modern safety stuff like blind spot monitoring. Those with a limitless budget can craft a upmarket hotel room on wheels. There’s even Apple about the campy stuff?In the UK there are two trim levels available, Beach and Ocean. The former offers five or seven seats, and comes with two double beds: one downstairs, when the seats are folded down, and one in the elevating roof you see in the pictures. It’s a cosy night’s sleep, too, with a heating system on board for colder an Ocean and you get the same amount of bedding but just four seats, the others elbowed out by a kitchenette (two hobs, a sink and fridge) and an assortment of cupboards. You also get mildly plusher interior trim, while the upstairs bedroom unfurls all the latest news, reviews and exclusives, direct to your start at £37,657 for a 100bhp Beach, rising to £54,975 for a 201bhp Cali Ocean with four-wheel drive and / 6That’s a couple of decades’ of holidays abroad…Indeed it is. But the Cali is as much a rival for 20 fortnights in Mallorca as it is the Porsche Boxster with which its prices you buy one of these because you want the flexibility of throwing a bunch of stuff in it and just going somewhere, quite probably at the drop of a Goretex hat and with some sort of lifestyle equipment attached to the California is so much more palatable than a motorhome, or the dreaded caravan. It’s more appropriate on single-carriageway roads on bank holiday weekends, for starters, but it’s also so, so easy to not going to talk about actual handling, are you?Maybe a little. The truth is the Cali grips well and doesn’t roll anywhere near as much as you might think, so cornering speeds will be dictated by how much you value the crockery in the cupboards, not its dynamic ability. And the driving position isn’t quite as stoically upright as its van roots might have you fearing. Sensors and a camera can ease any parking performance?While the entry-level engine is predictably the running cost champion with a combined its 0-62mph time doesn’t lie. With tonnes to shift when empty, it’s slow, and fully loaded it’ll require some proper pedalling up better choosing one of the other engines: the 148bhp tune, a little over two grand more, is more than game enough, and uses barely any less gearboxes operate slickly, while front-driven Calis don’t feel any harder work on road than those with 4Motion, so the rest of the spec depends on how easy-going you like your journeys between campsites, and how off-piste those sites actually probably buy the Beach and a portable stove for maximum flexibility, too. Get a seven seater and a pop-up tent for extra passengers and you’ve probably rinsed every last drop of practicality from an already quite able ‘car’.So is the California still a TG hero?Unquestionably. No change was strictly needed, in truth, so instead VW has focused on further rounding off the sharp, van-based edges and created an even more car-like experience. It’s a doddle to drive and a joy to explore its various nooks and crannies, such as the fold-out picnic table and chairs hidden in the door a Cali didn’t make sense to you before, it still won’t. But for those who get it, this is (unless Mercedes brings its Marco Polo to Britain) as petrolhead-friendly as campervanning gets. Several members of the TG office have a rather bluff, boxy space in the lottery-win garage for one. Do you?

Motorhomes News Coast Replaces Beach In The New T6 1 Vw California Campervan Range 21/10/2019 Share this story 78486c71-a5b3-43cc-a500-ec88dcdd9d38 Volkswagen’s own campervan, based on the newly facelifted Transporter, gets a revised range for the UK. Out goes the California Beach (the kitchenless version, which is still available in Germany) and in comes the California Coast, which is basically a lower-spec’d version of the top-of-the-range California Ocean. Unlike the Beach, the Coast comes with a fully-equipped side kitchen with gas hob and sink, plus a top-loading 42-litre compressor fridge, although the galley is finished in Bright Oak wood effect to differentiate it from the Graphite Grey slate effect in the Ocean. Standard equipment for the California Coast includes adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, 16in alloy wheels, automatic lights and wipers, Crosswind Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition, Active Lane Assist, Hill Descent Assist, leather multi-function steering wheel, camper control panel with touchscreen, two 150Ah leisure batteries, outdoor table and chairs, an awning, and a manually-operated elevating roof with fully-sprung upper bed measuring by The Coast is available only with the 148bhp (150PS) 2-litre TDI engine and seven-speed DSG gearbox, with prices starting at £53,178 ex-works. Prices for the higher-spec Ocean version begin at £61,488, with options to upgrade to the 196bhp (199PS) engine (from £64,290) as well as 4Motion all-wheel drive (from £67,428). Standard equipment on the California Ocean has been enhanced to include a number of new features, and this model retains the electric version of the elevating roof. Additional spec items include a new grille with five chrome strips (rather than the plainer grille used on the Coast), LED headlights and tail-lights, a digital cockpit display, new LED interior and cupboard lighting, and a Discover Media navigation system with 8in touchscreen, eight speakers and rear-view camera. The Ocean also comes with Park Assist (which assumes control of the steering when parallel parking) and Side Protection (which warns if you’re getting too close to other vehicles, walls, pedestrians, etc). On both Coast and Ocean there are new alloy wheel designs, new exterior colours (including three duo-tone options – Candy White/Copper Bronze, Candy White/Bay Leaf Green, Candy White/Ascot Grey) and now three choices of canvas colour for the rising roof – Strawberry Red, Glacier Blue or Basalt Grey.
